Even if the main objective was to look for Osprey, which was largely achieved (33% of all the observers saw at least one), many other species were seen by the 52 volunteers taking part in this year’s first Osprey Morning. A total of at least 116 different bird species were reported, including two observations of 2 Black-winged Stilts, rare for Switzerland. And a remarkable diversity of Ardeidae (Great, Little and Cattle Egret; Grey, Purple, Squacco and Black-crowned Night Heron; Little Bittern). There was also a nice variety of Laridae including 1 Arctic Tern, 2 Caspian Terns, 12 Black Tern, 10 Little Gull, and many breeding Common Terns, Black-headed Gull and Yellow-legged Gull. In addition to Osprey, various other raptors (Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Goshawk, Red and Black Kite, Common Buzzard, Honey Buzzard, Hobby, Kestrel) were also spotted. As well as some other iconic birds, such as White Stork and Hoopoe, not forgetting the lovely early morning concert of Golden Oriole, Cuckoo and a few Nightingales. Several mammals were also seen: Roe Deer, Wild Boar, Beaver, Fox and even a Badger, as well as a small herd of (non-native) Buffalo. Some participants even listed insects, including masses of Ephemera vulgata (identified by ObsIdentify, we will take their word for it).
